A BioBlitz is a hands-on nature activity for everyone: together we discover as many animal, fungal and plant species as possible in a certain area within a certain period of time. Simply take a photo with your smartphone and report your observations via the app - experts and AI will help you identify them. In this way, important research for nature conservation is created in passing. Anyone can take part, without any prior knowledge. Ideal for families, school classes, clubs - and anyone who is curious about nature on their doorstep.

For our BioBlitz in Karlsruhe, we’re partnering with the Obsidentify.org platform. The free Obsidentify app is required to participate in the BioBlitz.

1. Install the Obsidentify app.
   Use your smartphone to search for the Obsidentify app in your preferred app store. You can find it here in the Google Play Store and here in the Apple Store.
2. Open the Obsidentify app.
3. Create an account.
   Select “Dashboard” from the navigation bar at the bottom of the app. Here, you’ll be asked if you already have an Obsidentify account. Tap the option below that: “Create an account here.” You can then easily create an account in the app using an email address.
   NOTE: The display name you provide will be publicly visible with your observations. So choose a display name if you want to share your observations anonymously with the public.
4. Confirm your email address.
   You’ll receive an email from Obsidentify that you can use to confirm your email address for your new account.
5. Get started and start observing.
   The next section explains exactly how to begin observing wild species in Karlsruhe.

1. Find a species.
   Find a wild animal, mushroom, or plant species outdoors in the Karlsruhe metropolitan area that you’d like to identify and record with BioBlitz.
   PLEASE NOTE: This cannot include selfies, people, pets, or potted or garden plants.
2. Open the Obsidentify app. 
3. Select the “Identify” tab at the bottom. 
4. Tap the camera icon. 
5. Take a photo of the species you found and let Obsidentify identify it right away. 
6. Save your observation.
7. Find the next species.

You can then view your observations in the app. The location of your sighting, the photo, the time, and your username will also be shared publicly on BioBlitz Karlsruhe. There’s also a map there where the location of your sighting will be marked with a dot, provided you’re the first person in Karlsruhe to have observed that species.

   PLEASE NOTE: Only entries for newly discovered species appear as dots on the map and at the top of the table as soon as they are saved. Entries for species that have already been found are listed below the first discovery in the table.
4. Check out our Advent calendar.
   Even in winter, many species can be observed in the Karlsruhe urban area. We’ve put together an Advent calendar based on the observations from our BioBlitz. Between December 1 and 24, 2025, you’ll find new daily trivia questions, fun facts, and much more about the Karlsruhe BioBlitz on the screens at TRIANGEL Transfer | Kultur | Raum and here on the website. The BioBlitz findings and facts in the calendar are carefully reviewed by experts from the Natural History Museum.
