An exhibition about repositories and democracy

*This exhibition is completely in German*
The waste of the nuclear age, i.e. spent fuel rods from nuclear power plants and other radioactive materials, must be stored safely in Germany for a million years. To ensure that citizens and nature are protected, the highly radioactive waste is to be stored deep underground - securely sealed and inaccessible to future generations. But who actually decides where and how such a storage facility is created?
The exhibition "Wer entscheidet denn sowas? Endlager und Demokratie" ("Who decides? Repositories and democracy") invites you to explore this question. It shows that the search for a repository is not just about geology and technical safety, but that citizen participation, joint action and smart political decision-making processes are just as important. It is also about making people aware that far-reaching decisions sometimes have to be made in the face of great uncertainty.
Visitors can expect a mixture of interactive stations, illustrative materials and unusual perspectives that invite reflection and discussion. This exhibition is for anyone who is interested in the intersection between science, technology and society, regardless of previous knowledge.
Cooperation partners
The exhibition is a cooperation between the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS), the Institute for Nuclear Waste Management at KIT, Kerntechnische Entsorgung Karlsruhe GmbH (KTE) and the KIT Center Humans and Technology.
