24 little doors to urban nature

The Bioblitz Advent calendar sweetened the pre-Christmas period with exciting quiz questions, surprising fun facts, and little discoveries from Karlsruhe. The campaign was launched by MuT2Go with Dr. Judith Bieberich, project manager of "Species Knowledge for All" at the State Museum of Natural History. Together with her colleagues, she checked all submitted observations for accuracy and provided an exclusive insight into the Bioblitz work process, from collecting species to the diversity of animal, fungus, and plant species that can be discovered in Karlsruhe.
In the Advent period from December 1 to 24, 2025, a total of 77 observations with 48 different species were found. These included birds, mammals, molluscs, vascular plants, fungi, beetles and many more.
What did we learn?
Nothing is as it seems: while some species retreat during the cold season, for others, this is when their active phase begins, undisturbed by predators or in search of a mating partner. In addition, many species surprise us with unusual names, such as the jelly ear (mushroom), dog sick slime mold (mushroom) or the ruby tiger bear (moth).
Reactions
The Advent campaign brought a lot of joy both to the citizens who discovered the little advent doors in the shop window of TRIANGEL Transfer | Kultur | Raum or online, as well as to the BioBlitz team.
Become a species finder yourself, maybe your discoveries will soon end up in one of our next campaigns!
