Authoritarian tendencies are on the rise worldwide - and use digital technologies specifically for their own purposes: through disinformation on social networks, deceptively real deepfakes or the takeover of entire communication platforms such as Twitter. These developments jeopardize trust in democratic institutions and divide society.

Technical solutions such as democratic and transparent digital infrastructures are needed to make democracies resistant to these attacks. But we also need an informed, media-savvy public and the participation and inclusion of individuals in society. How can we achieve this? What responsibilities do civil society, science, politics and business have - and how can they work together?

In his talk, Prof. Christof Weinhardt will give an insight into his ongoing research projects on social polarization and disinformation and present digital tools that counter digital threats. In the subsequent afterwork event, we will work together to develop concrete ideas and options for action to make democracy more resilient - in the digital space, but also on the ground:

  • What can and can't digital tools do?
  • How do we promote critical media literacy - individually and structurally?
  • What local services are needed so that people trust democratic institutions and feel involved? Where is the state needed, where civil society?
