Social and technological change requires inter- and transdisciplinary science.

The KIT-Center Humans and Technology (Mensch und Technik - MuT) offers its members an agile platform to help the joint commitment of scientists and change agents achieve greater impact. MuT promotes excellent research, education and collaboration as well as social dialogue to shape sustainable, transformative processes in socio-technical systems.

Why crises in football are no coincidence

When results fail to materialise, morale plummets and coaches come under pressure, crises in professional football tend to arise spontaneously. Researchers from the MuT network use mathematics and psychology to identify performance crises early on.

Visualizing Science (Two-day) [On-site Workshop]

Visualizing Science (Two-day) [On-site Workshop]

March 17, 2026 9:00 - 17:00Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) Bldg. 20.30, seminar room 4.048 (forth floor)
The event will be held in English and run for two days, on March 17 and 18, 2026.

Scientific research is often difficult to comprehend for individuals both outside the respective discipline and academia in general, particularly if it is communicated solely in technical terms. However, in times in which it becomes ever more important for scientists to exchange information across disciplinary boundaries and with the public, it is vital that they know communication tools that help non-specialist audiences to gain a better understanding of their research. Given that humans generally process and store visual information (e.g. images, sketches) more effectively than text-based information, we focus on techniques that allow you to graphically present your research topics for a lay audience.

This seminar introduces participants to basic design principles and methods. It is interactive: Teaching content alternates with practical phases as well as question and answer sessions. The focus of the seminar lies on communication with audiences outside of academia. You will learn how to present your research topic more vividly and make it more accessible to non-trained audiences by creating an infographic. The seminar aims at teaching basic principles of design, sharing helpful resources and methods and facilitating your venture into visualisation. Data visualisation will not be discussed.

In particular, the following topics are covered:
• Basic design principles for visualisations
• Defining the essential aspects of your research: Finding your own core message
• Achieving more: Planning and sketching infographics
• Poster, presentation, comics: Different aims and visual requirements
• Introduction to AI-Tools

At the end of the first day of the workshop, you will be given a little exercise to do at home (60 - 90 minutes) that will be discussed on the second day.

This event is open to doctoral researchers and postdocs at KIT who are KHYS members. If you are currently not yet a member of KHYS, you can register here.

The event will be held in English and run for two days, on March 17 and 18, 2026.

We generally expect participants to attend throughout the entire duration of the event.

If you are unable to attend an event, please inform us promptly via e-mail. This way you are allowing your colleagues the opportunity to participate and you help us to maintain the quality of our Further Education Program. Thank you!
