Interdisciplinary Infrastructures
Participatory and transdisciplinary research for and with society needs interfaces where different stakeholders can work together. These can be meeting places as well as scientific infrastructures or digital platforms. The following list shows KIT facilities and locations that are also open to other researchers and are particularly relevant to the topics of the KIT Center for Humans and Technology.

The “MobiLab” was established in 2021 as a mobile participation laboratory in the form of a tiny house and is coordinated by the KIT Center Humans and Technology and the Karlsruhe Transformation Center for Sustainability and Cultural Change (KAT) (research group at ITAS). It provides a platform for exchange between science and society and can be used for a wide range of participatory research, citizen science, science communication, participation, and dialogue.

The DFG-funded Karlsruhe Decision & Design Lab (KD²Lab), located in the heart of Karlsruhe, is one of the world's largest computer-based experimental laboratories. It offers optimal conditions for interdisciplinary and internationally recognized cutting-edge research, particularly in the fields of human decision-making behavior, human-machine interaction, and social interaction, with its outstanding infrastructure for economic, neurophysiological, and psychophysiological experiments in a highly controlled environment.

The Zukunftsraum serves as an interface between science and citizens. The real-world laboratory "Quartier Zukunft – Labor Stadt" offers it to anyone who wants to explore ideas for the sustainable transformation of all areas of life. The Zukunftsraum regularly hosts seminars, workshops, lectures, and exhibitions, particularly on the topic of sustainable neighborhood development. Local groups and initiatives can use the Zukunftsraum to host events related to research, teaching, and innovation in the spirit of sustainable development.

Many of the topics researched at KIT on an interdisciplinary basis, such as the energy transition, artificial intelligence, and the future of mobility, directly affect the lives of citizens. To further intensify the dialogue between science and society in Karlsruhe, the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS) opened the Karl9 - Science Hub for Technology and Society on Karlstraße in April 2024. Karl9 can host events for up to 25 people and exhibitions. Additionally, the flexible, barrier-free space can be used for participatory formats in which citizens can contribute their knowledge and perspectives on technological issues.
